10 Ways That Starting a Small Business is Like Starting a Family - #6 A Sense of Humor Will Save You

Updated: Jan 2, 2024

There’s an unwritten, silent rule for having kids. The same rule applies to having your own business: You need to have a sense of humor. If you don’t, it’s going to be a long, painful road.

If you’re a parent, a business owner, or both, you know EXACTLY what I’m talking about.

Those naughty words that your child picked up (where, you have NO idea) and has uttered at the most inappropriate time? And, you had to act like you were mad, but were cracking up the entire time?

The presentation you’ve worked so hard on that’s magically disappeared and can’t be uncovered? (Okay, there’s no cracking up here. This is pure anger.)

The client that calls you on Saturday asking if you can go over some feedback?

The period of time in your child’s life when they become obsessed with bodily function noises? (This period of time lasts way too long, by the way.)

(If you’re having flashbacks with any of these, I sincerely apologize.)

The point is, humor is so incredibly important in moments like these. That’s not to say that it isn’t so painful and frustrating and humiliating at the moment, but this stuff happens. It will happen again. You’ll live to see another day, and with it, another embarrassing and hilarious moment.

It might be a full-out belly laugh; a nervous, I-hope-that-never-happens-again laugh; or a chuckle of disbelief, but someday, you’ll look back at all of these scenarios and find the humor. I promise.

Except for the presentation one. That one will haunt your dreams. 😉
