As I’ve discussed in detail over the past few weeks, having kids and having a business is similar in many ways—but the reason this week really hits home: you’re going to lose sleep, and a lot of it.
I remember reading an article a while ago that said parents lose a total of 133 nights of sleep in their baby’s first year. I also remember thinking, “Hmm. Seems a little low to me.”
As a parent, you spend the first part of your child’s life up at night wondering if you’re making the right decisions for them, comparing yourself to other parents (which is never helpful, but we do it anyway), and taking care of them when they’re sick. As they get older, you might get a little more sleep, but you still lie awake at night wondering if they’re making the right decisions for themselves, if they’re being safe, if they’ve remembered all the advice you’ve given them on a zillion things.
There are so many parallels in running a business. As I’ve worked to relaunch and build Hoege Consulting & Coaching, there’s a fair amount of insomnia and sleepless nights—wondering if all the investments you’re making in your business will pay off, comparing yourself to other business owners, figuring out if you’re ready for that calculated risk that can move your business forward, and so much more.
Come to think of it, it might be 133 nights of sleep lost in that business first year. Actually, it might be more.
